Photographer's Guide to the Grand Canyon and Northern Arizona
Published in Paperback by Stackpole Books (January, 2001)
Author: Joseph K. Lange
Average review score:

Everything you need to know to photograph this area
This book is the third in the author's arsenal, and it is just as useful as the other two. The author is a wonderful photographer, just the images in the book would be worth the price, but the reader gets a lot more:
Detailed descriptions of where to go for the best shots, and the best times to go there. For some of the areas, you get a mile-by-mile log, and even some compositional suggestions. Even if one has been to these places previously, this book contains extremely valuable information for the serious photographer.

Pilgrim's Road: A Journey to Santiago De Compostela
Published in Paperback by Little Brown & Co (Pap) (June, 1995)
Author: Bettina Selby
Average review score:

Fascinating book of a woman's bicycle journey across Spain
It's been a while since I've read this book, but it still lingers. Selby, a middle-aged woman biking alone through the Pyrenees and across Spain to Santiago de Compostela, is full of wit, great stories, and endless energy (how she kept peddling after quaffing a bit of the free vino offered to pilgrims itself is amazing). It inspires an amateur bicyclist like me to pedal a few extra miles whenever I envision her journey. Even if you are not a bike enthusiast, you'll love her tales of the people she meets, the tiny towns she travels through, and the sense of triumph she feels upon reaching her destination

The Pipes Are Calling : Our Jaunts Through Ireland
This book is truly a magnificent piece of writing. Niall Williams and Christine Breen describe their jaunts with their daughter Deirdre so clearly that you are with them in their car as they experience the excitement as they travel the back roads of Ireland -- all of the the sights, smells, sounds and feelings of the different places the travel to, and best of all their life back home in Kiltumper.

They fill the book with wonderful homey anecdotes about their travels, life at their farm and with their neighbors. Stories that not only open the door into their lives, but welcome you in with a steaming mug of tea and a hearty slice of Christine's Brown Bread.

A Place Apart
Published in Hardcover by Devin-Adair Pub (January, 1979)
Author: Dervla, Murphy
Average review score:

Essential reading for anyone seeking to understand NI
Anyone who has ever been baffled by the seemingly mindless intransigence of politics in 'Norn Iron' (and, let's face it, who hasn't?) should beg, borrow or steal this superb book. Politicians are a product of their society and this is the most brilliantly insightful book I have ever read on Northern Irish society. What other writer would sit through the tedium of EIGHT Free Presbyterian services in various locations so as to ensure she had a proper understanding of that peculiarly Ulster phenomenon? Who else has attempted to get to know what South Armagh is really like behind the facile 'bandit country' cliches?

Most of those who hold forth on the subject either lack a real understanding of the North or bring a Unionist/Nationalist agenda to bear on their writings. Murphy manages to be both harshly critical of some sectors of Northern society (Orangemen, Provos) whilst retaining sympathy for them as individuals and attempting to understand how they come to hold the beliefs they do. Only one figure becomes uglier the more closely she observes him - Ian Paisley. Her description of the near hypnotic power which his sermons exerted on his listeners was chilling.

Dervla Murphy's combination of thoroughness and keen insight, together with her fluid writing style, make this an enthralling read. Now well over 20 years old, it is still the best portrait of Northern society yet written. Highly recommended.

Population Ecology of the Bobwhite
Published in Hardcover by Southern Illinois Univ Pr (Trd) (December, 1983)
Authors: John L. Roseberry, Willard D. Klimstra, and Willard D. Klimstra
Average review score:

A genuine classic
Population Ecology of the Bobwhite is the best technical treatise on bobwhites that has been written. The book provides a thorough and scholarly exposition of basic life history and management as well as a detailed, cutting-edge analysis of populations dynamics and harvest management. When I like books a lot, the books are highlighted, underlined, starred, and exclamation-pointed. My copy of Roseberry and Klimstra's book is a mess, but that's because it contains so much useful information that I have flagged in one way or another.

Practical Magic in the Northern Tradition
Published in Paperback by New Leaf Distributors (01 October, 1994)
Author: Nigel Pennick
Average review score:

Germanic folk magic at its best
This book is an excellent study of the folk magic practices of the Germanic peoples. Most books on Germanic magic and religion talk more about the structure and form of the Germans, not what they practiced. In Pennick's book he talks about specific folk traditions and customs that have been practiced for hundreds of years, some of which are still observed. This book is more an interesting collection of folk magic than anything else and as far as I know, the only one on the Germans. It is and enjoyable read and an invaluable source for the Germanic praticitioner.

Pre-revolutionary Dutch Houses And Families In Northern New Jersey And Southern New York
Published in Library Binding by Reprint Services Corp (January, 1936)
Author: Rosalie Bailey
Average review score:

Excellent Mid-Atlantic Dutch Genealogy Source
If you are researching a family that originated with the 17th and 18th century Dutch colonies in America, please do not miss this book.

This is one of the richest regional background sources for genealogical research available. Bailey did a wonderful thing in preserving on paper the house histories of the areas mentioned in the title. Too many of these houses are forever gone. Just as wonderfully, she researched and wrote family histories of the people who owned and occupied the houses.

As a professional genealogist, as well as an architectural historian, she used primary sources, such as wills and deeds, as well as secondary sources, like local histories and biographies, to document the lives of each house's owners and residents. As a clear and clever writer, she made what can be a dry topic readable and enjoyable.

Proprio Italiano: Authentic Northern Italian Menus and Recipes
Published in Paperback by Betterway Pubns (October, 1991)
Authors: Lina Michi Coruccini and Lina Corucinni
Average review score:

The Real Italian Food Primer
This is absolutely the very best Italian cookbook I have ever seen. Each of the dishes is superb and explained in detail preparation steps. The idea of showing suggested menus works very well when you are trying to figure out what to serve with what. If you only know your basic Italian foods, then you are in for a treat. I have never failed to receive fine compliments from serving any of Lina's recipes. If you can have only one Italian cookbook, this is the one to have. These are truly authentic and expertly researched recipes. Congratulations to Lina for doing an excellent job!

The Pteromalidae of North-Western Europe (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea)
Published in Unknown Binding by British Museum (Natural History) ()
Author: Marcus William Robert de Vere Graham
Average review score:

An excellent taxonomic reference to Pteromalidae.
This book was the most important identification reference for Pteromalidae in the Holarctic region up until recently, and is still the most authoritative reference in that region for species identification. It is still the most reliable identification guide to European Pteromalidae, and it is not likely to be replaced soon. The drawings are among the best available, and the information is still relatively up-to-date for its time, though it is recommended that students make sure the information they find here is up to date by consulting more recent literature.
